Our approach

Materio was born out of the first-hand experience with the frustrating process of remodeling a house. Countless spreadsheets, email threads, and text messages made it next to impossible to keep track of where we were in the process, and naturally, things fell through the cracks. 

Knowing there had to be a better way, we began searching for a solution and found that everything in the market was for either designers or builders—not both. We dreamt of a platform that would bring everyone on a project together, connecting two sides of the industry that work together daily while bringing homeowners into the equation.

After speaking to folks on both sides, we discovered that they needed a unifying system that could scale to projects of any size and would decrease the amount of time spent on fixing miscommunication. 

Over the next two years, we put to work our expertise in organizing systems and developing software to create a solution that would keep teams on track, increase profitability, and give clients peace of mind. 

How we got here

Every element of Materio is heavily steeped in user research and testing because we believe in custom-building software specifically tailored to an industry’s unique needs and challenges.

Materio isn’t simply a digitization of outdated paper processes or an improvement on existing options in the market. It’s a radical rethinking of how we approach communication and workflows for the benefit of all involved and how we leverage the best of technology to make it happen (without overcomplicating it!) 

Our goal is to give you a quality tool that helps you win jobs, impress clients, and most importantly, build homes and spaces on time and on budget. 

Always learning

Since launching in 2020, we’ve heard from happy customers that Materio is exactly what they needed and more, replacing the patchwork of systems they’d been using. We work closely with them to continuously improve and add new features, making Materio more useful.

Leadership Team

Thomas is a technical leader with over a decade of experience. Prior to founding Materio, he created Squarespace’s Commerce platform and led its engineering team, growing it to hundreds of thousands of merchants transacting billions of dollars per year. He is a systems thinker who relentlessly simplifies Materio, makes it faster, and ensures it is built for scale. In spite of the widely varied needs of every business, he invents simple solutions that serve them all.

Mary Beth comes from a family of builders and designers, seeing firsthand their daily struggles with complex remodels. Though she built a career crafting digital products, after the huge frustrations of managing her own apartment remodel, she decided to start Materio to solve the problem once and for all. A strategic problem solver, Mary Beth brings her design background and deep understanding of User Experience research to ensure Materio is constantly learning from its users and taking steps to optimize their work every day.
